Niantic has announced a new mini-event, where Galarian Mr. Mime and its evolution, Mr. Rime will be making their Pokémon GO debut. Next weekend will feature Pokémon related to cold and to sound, such as Jynx, Swinub, Spoink, Woobat, Cubchoo, and more.
The event Pokémon will be attracted by incense. This event also marks the debut of a shiny Cubchoo. The Pokémon is relatively rare for many people, so make sure to use your incense from Friday, December 18, 2020, at 10:00 AM to Monday, December 21, 2020, at 8:00 PM local time. Incense activated during the event will last for three hours and be more effective.
However, getting your hands on the Dancing Pokémon and its Evolution, Mr. Rime won’t be easy. Both of the Pokémon will be available only for ticketholders of a Special Research story.
“You can purchase a ticket to gain access to this unique limited-time experience and complete Special Research to earn an encounter with Galarian Mr. Mime! You’ll also be able to earn enough Mr. Mime Candy to evolve your Galarian Mr. Mime into Mr. Rime,” reads Niantic’s news release.
Additionally, ticketholders will earn a special event medal. By completing Special Research tasks, Trainers will earn encounters with Pokémon such as Alolan Vulpix, Jigglypuff, Jynx, Whismur, Chimecho, and Snorunt. Exclusive Field Research tasks will lead to encounters with Jynx, Lapras, Woobat, and Cubchoo. The ticket also comes with a brand-new avatar pose inspired by Mr. Mime.
Completing Special Research will earn Trainers three Incense, three Rare Candies, 30 Ultra Balls, three Premium Battle Passes, one Poffin, two Glacial Lure Modules, three Super Incubators, and three Star Pieces.
All these perks might seem great to you. However, the ticket to get all the items, Pokémon encounters and two new Pokémon comes with a hefty price tag of US $7.99, or the equivalent in your local currency.
Trainers on social media have voiced their discontent with Niantic over the cheekily titled “Tap... Tap... Tappity-Tap... Special Research”. Players from over the world pointed out that despite special items that come with the $7.99 ticket, it is still essentially paying to get one Pokémon.
A popular Pokémon GO YouTuber Nick Oyzon (also known as Trainer Tips) also shared his thoughts regarding the event. He pointed out that Galarian Mr. Mime is not mythical, nor legendary, or special in any way.
According to Oyzon, putting such an uninteresting Pokémon behind a paywall sets a bad precedent for the future of the game. He urged his viewers to voice their concerns to Niantic in order to make sure that such things won’t become the standard gameplay in the future.
Some players on Twitter and Facebook even pledged to boycott the game and called the $7.99 price tag a “money-hungry move”.
Another popular Pokémon GO YouTuber known as REVERSAL also voiced his concerns on Twitter.
“Let me set the right example as one of the main #PokemonGO Content Creators. I WILL NOT Participate in the Mr. Rime Special Research, I will also not open up Pokémon GO on the day of the Special Research event. I don't want to promote an event I'm not supporting,” said the content creator in a tweet.
Mr. Mime, a dual-type Psychic/Fairy Pokémon was first introduced in Generation I and made its Pokémon GO debut when the game launched back in 2016. However, aside from some limited events, Mr. Mime has only been available in Europe.
Generation I Mr. Mime being a regional has only added to the frustration of Trainers, not from the region. The release of the Galarian form will be a possibility for those players to register both Kanto and Galar forms in their Pokédex.
The Galarian Mr. Mime has an Ice/Psychic-type regional form and evolves into Mr. Rime.
In other news, you might have noticed Regirock popping up in Legendary Raids this weekend. You can still get your hands on Regirock until December 13, 10 PM local time. Other Regis will also be making a comeback in the coming weeks.
Next weekend, you will be able to get Registeel in raids from December 19, 6:00 AM to December 20, 10:00 PM local time. The third of the Regi trio, Regice will make an appearance in raids from December 26, 6:00 AM to December 27, 10:00 PM local time.
Keep
in mind that the shiny variants of the so-called Legendary Titans are also
available. Make sure to get out and catch as many as you can.
