In Master League Classic, only Pokémon that haven’t been powered up with Candy XL are allowed. As for the new Retro Cup, only the first 15 Pokémon types, excluding Dark, Steel, and Fairy types, will be usable in this cup, and the CP limit will be 1,500. The original types are Bug, Dragon, Electric, Fighting, Fire, Flying, Ghost, Grass, Ground, Ice, Normal, Poison, Psychic, Rock, and Water.
All three leagues will run from Monday, May 17, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. to Monday, May 24, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. PDT (GMT −7).
The Kanto Cup will make its return this season, with the usual CP limit of 1,500. Only Pokémon first discovered in the Kanto region and therefore with a Pokédex number from #001 to #151 are allowed to compete. Your rating won’t be affected during the Kanto Cup, so you can get creative and try out different Pokémon teams without worrying about your standing in the GO Battle League. An unranked Kanto Cup will run from Monday, May 24, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. to Monday, May 31, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. PDT (GMT −7).
In addition, attack updates are coming to Trainer Battles in Season 7 of the GBL. These changes will be implemented on Monday, April 12, 2021, at 1:00 p.m. PDT (GMT −7).
Pokémon will be able to learn a new move - Grass-type Leaf Storm. Some Pokémon that couldn’t learn Dark-type Charged Attack Payback will be able to learn it starting from April 12.
Leaf Storm is a powerful Grass-type Charged Attack, and it decreases your Pokémon’s Attack stat after use. Sunflora, Celebi, Ludicolo, Roserade, and Leavanny will be able to learn Leaf Storm.
Persian, Alolan Persian, Cacnea, Cacturne, Absol, Bronzor, Bronzong, and Liepard will now able to learn Payback.
As for the rewards this Season, the Pikachu Libre avatar items will available for Trainers who reach rank 10. Trainers who reach Legend rank will earn avatar items and a pose inspired by Elesa, who made her first appearance in Pokémon Black Version and Pokémon White Version. At rank 19, you’ll receive an Elite Charged TM, and you’ll also receive an Elite Fast TM as an end-of-season reward.
Finally, Niantic has decided to not bring back
the walking requirement needed to unlock the GO Battle League. When the GBL
launched, Trainers were required to walk 3 kilometers to unlock one set of
battles. Due to the COVID-19 global pandemic and stay-at-home orders worldwide,
the walking requirement was temporarily removed in spring 2020. The change
seems to be permanent now and the walking requirement won’t be coming back to
GO Battle League.
